The Communication University of China Sets Up an Audible Study Room for Students Who Need to Make Sounds for Practice

已更新:6月20日

The Communication University of China sets up an audible self-study room for students to practice reading aloud and other sound-related activities. While some find it helpful for speech practice, others feel it is unnecessary.

The Education Service Center of Communication University of China set up an audible self-study room for students in the No. 48 Teaching Building On Oct. 6.

Students are free to read aloud, discuss assignments with classmates, recite in preparations for exams such as the Postgraduate Entrance Examination and dub videos here.

The audible self-study room aims to meet the needs of students for learning activities such as reading aloud and reciting. Compared to a regular study room, an audible self-study room allows for a greater variety of learning activities. Instead of just sitting quietly reading essays or doing homework, students can read aloud and recite with sound.

Students have had different opinions about the audible study room since it opened.

Zhang Luyue, a postgraduate student in the Broadcasting and Anchoring School at CUC used the room with her classmates and thought it was helpful.

The study room provides me with a quiet environment where I could practice my speech without outside interference and in relative privacy,” Zhang said.

However, Li Jianshu, a junior from the Journalism School, says she believes that the existence of an audible self-study room is unnecessary.

“You don't need to go to the special audible study room, because it's very easy to find an empty classroom in the Teaching Building to do audible assignments well,” Li said.

Although it is an audible study room, students still think of it as an ordinary study room and do not make a sound here, which causes problems for students who really want to read aloud in the room.

Zhang said that this was the second time she came to actually use the audible self-study room, because the first time she came the students were studying quietly, and thought that if she was the only one making noise, it would disturb the other students.

Students say the choice of location for the audible self-study room is also fraught with controversy. Currently, the audible self-study room is set up on the top floor of the teaching building and is only directly accessible by a specific elevator. Many students give up on the idea of going to the audible self-study room because it is difficult to access.

“If the location is on a lower level of the building, students' out-loud recitations will interfere with teaching activities in other classrooms, which is not appropriate,” Li said.

In the future, students who use the audible self-study room hope the school will improve the room and increase the use rate of the room based on their feedback.

Firstly, equipping professional microphones and headsets so that students can have more professional radio equipment to complete assignments such as video dubbing, and also to make the environment in the study room less noisy.

Secondly, improving the rules for the use of the audible self-study room. It is students’ hope that silent study will not be permitted. The students say that will make them feel as thought they are disturbing the quiet students.

As a new facility on campus, the audible self-study room has considerable problems at present, but it will be welcomed by more students when it is equipped with more complete facilities and improves rules of using more comprehensive.
